Pettuscal
OS 1234 5678
Fife

Derivation:

from the Gaelic "peit an t-soisgeil, 'the gospel's share.'" (Watson, WJ 1926)

Earlier forms:

Pettuscal
1590 (Register of the Great Seal of Scotland)
Bantuscall 1594 (Register of the Great Seal of Scotland)
Bantiscall 1652 (Register of the Great Seal of Scotland)

Notes:

Pettuscal was the name given to the lands of the vicarage of Lathrisk, which "may have been near the Mansion House of Lathrisk, now in Kettle parish, but the old name seems gone." (Watson, WJ 1926)

"The lands may have been so called simply as belonging to the Church, having been gifted as a screabal soiscela, 'gospel penny,' like the places called Ibert and Offerance." (Watson, WJ 1926)
